Making Modern Japanese-Style Painting: Kano Hogai and the Search for Images by Chelsea Foxwell
An interesting book about how the opening of Japan to the west in the mid 19th century affected Japanese painting. One of the books main focuses are exhibitions, both international and domestic. The other focus is the artist Kano Hogai who started his career under the old system of patronage during the shogunate and then had to transition to the new ways after the shogunate had ended. This book has many color illustrations.
